Marble care: moss, dulling and unreadable lettering

The wrong product damages marble for good. Correct cleaning lifts dirt without sealing the stone's pores.

Marble care: moss, dulling and unreadable lettering

What to avoid

Bleach, spirits of salt and acidic cleaners strip marble's shine permanently. A wire brush widens the lettering grooves. Both look clean at first, which is why they are common mistakes.

Legible lettering

Dirt in the grooves comes out with a soft brush and plenty of water. Gilding wears off over time; renewing it is stonemason's work and may need the cemetery's permission.
